Client: University of Birmingham 

Project: School of Engineering – new Build.  The works comprise the construction of a new circa 10,000m² facility for the School of Engineering and Birmingham Centre for Railway Research & Education together with a 2600m² link building housing a Railway Digital Systems Innovation Centre (DSIC).  The School of Engineering building space use allocation will include academic and administrative offices, meeting rooms, design studios, learning lounges, laboratories and specific purposes (e.g. Anechoic Chamber). 

Project Value: £45m 

Key Risks: Prior to and during commencement of the works numerous activities/hazards were identified which required mitigating including addressing: – 

  • Traffic management – proximity to heavily used student pedestrian routs.  Construction traffic route onto campus will cross the pedestrian routes. 
  • Foundations/site clearance – historic radioactive store. 
  • Site material movements/building frame erection/roof level plant room installations. 
  • Vehicular access to DSIC heavy labs service yard. 
  • Maintaining grass embankment and retaining structures to the west of the site. 

Comments: SBA were appointed by University of Birmingham through the framework agreement.
