Alexander Stadium Redevelopment


Client: Birmingham City Council 

Project: Redevelopment of the Alexander Stadium site following the demolition of thee stands.  The works comprise:- Construction of a new stand to the west which will form a new home straight; further seating; construction of a new 0-lane 400m track built within the stadium; construction of a 6-lane warm up track and throwing field; civil engineering works including provision of roads and drainage; all associated mechanical and electrical works including utilities and associated hard and soft landscaping works. 

Project Value: £74m 

Key Risks: Prior to and during commencement of the works numerous activities/hazards were identified which required mitigating including addressing: – 

  • Demolition of existing 1970 stands. 
  • Construction works and earthworks near the canal, changing site levels. 
  • Existing buried services and utilities diversion. 
  • Works close to or within existing occupied buildings. 
  • General construction activities. 
  • Temporary stability of steel frame and construction sequence – specifically roof. 
  • Installation of large glazing panes. 
  • Protection of vulnerable areas of building from vehicle damage. 
  • UXO risks. 

Comments: SBA were appointed by Birmingham City Council through Arup as Principal Designer early on in the project and once a Contractor was appointed we have taken on the role of CDM Advisor to the Client (Birmingham City Council) and will remain involved in the project until completion overseeing the CDM aspect of the project in conjunction with the Principal Designer appointed by the Principal Contractor.
