Client:           University of Birmingham

Project:          The Green Heart Café project is defined as the interior fit out of the café shell that will be completed as part of the Green Heart project being undertaken by Willmott Dixon Construction.  As part of the Green Heart contract, the following elements were completed prior to the internal works for the café: Watertight Structure: All external walls, doors, windows, and curtain walling will be installed; External Works: All landscape works will be completed and electrical containment installed for external signage, data points and power; Internal Works: All blockwork walls, screed and underground drainage pop ups were provided.

Project Value:  £1m

Key Risks:      Prior to and during commencement of the works numerous activities/hazards were identified which required mitigating including addressing: –

  • Contractor compound within a ‘live’ University construction site and adjacent occupied buildings – Risk of unauthorised access by other contractors/other users.
  • Site Access and Deliveries – Danger t users of access roads and pavements, motorists and pedestrians due to collision with construction traffic particularly when plant or vehicles are reversing.
  • Retaining existing fire exits – As envelope will be in place at commencement of works, routs and doors for fire exits will need to remain in use as exits while also used for deliveries.
  • General Activities – Noise, dust and vibration causing health issues and disruption to adjacent Muirhead Tower.

Comments:     SBA were appointed by University of Birmingham through the framework agreement.
