Barber Institute – New Air Handling Units -University of Birmingham

Project:          The works included the overhaul of Air Handling Units (AHU’s); replacement of humidity units, alteration of ductwork within plantroom and installation of sensors to gallery extract ventilation, together with installation of permanent edge protection around high level glazed gallery lanterns.

Key Risks:      Prior to and during commencement of the works numerous activities/hazards were identified which required mitigating including addressing: –

  • Asbestos removals
  • Construction within a live University site
  • Internal pedestrian routes: all works were in existing public/user circulation and fire escape routes which were to remain in use at all times.
  • Working at height – over low-level glazing to gallery lanterns.
  • Working in confined space with significant numbers of operatives.
  • Manual Handling of internal parts of AHU’s and ductwork pieces.
  • Isolating of M&E services.
  • Upgrading and/or stripping out of existing life safe and intruder systems to laboratory areas containing insitu equipment.
